In Māori tradition, one origin story of tā moko follows Mataora, who journeys to the underworld (Rarohenga) to win back Niwareka after mistreating her. There, Niwareka’s father, Uetonga, reveals the difference between temporary markings and permanent moko, and teaches Mataora the art he later brings back to the world above.
This design is a wearable nod to that legacy: identity carried with pride, and respect earned through action. Made for movement, but grounded in tradition.
